Easy On The Ears

Something I wrote back in Form 4 for the English Oral Test.

Music. Is. Life.

Not everyone believes in this philosophy, but there are some that do. These are the people who can't function without first turning on their CD players; these are the people that mention some band, some lyric, some show in every other conversation; these are the poeple who can lay on a carpet with headphones on for 4 hours straight and just zone out with the power of it. They will stand in line for tickets, stand in an audience of 5 and spend that RM 50 on a CD just to show support.

These people have very strong music views.

If you know me, then you know I'm all about the music. I'm pretty much really picky when it comes to it. I'll be the first to admit that I have very definite views on what music is and what music isn't It's just a part of who I am and if you're one of my friends then you know how strongly I feel about it and how hard I can be to deal with when I get going.

Basically, I believe that music goes well beyond the lyrics, voice and instruments. Music is all of that and the feeling that it generates. I look for things that may exist between the words. When I listen to it, I don't want it to be mindless, I want it to mean something. I want it to make me feel.
Music is nothing if it can't make me feel.

Music is Life. And life isn't always pretty.

So if what we listen to is a reflection of life, why would some people submit themselves to this glossed well-produced piece of perfection that people have planned dance moves for. You know what kind of music I'm talking about so I won't go into lengthy details. All I can say is, "They all sound the same!". As far as vocalists go, some singers in these groups have talent. But as a whole? Every time I hear a sugar-sweet confection of bubblegum pop on any radio or television station, it's enough to make me want to pick up a chainsaw and cut off my limbs. Poeple always ask me what is my thing against boybands. I couldn't possibly let you sit through that rant, so i'll tell you this: It's not the fact that they don't play instruments.

And I like my instruments. I like them a little louder, rougher, a little more either experimental or harder than some people do. I like bands that are true DIY-ers. Although I do give everything a fair shot before deciding if I do or don't like them. But what I like most right now is music that makes me want to just lay there and appreciate it.

My music isn't for everyone, it takes a true fan, someone in love with the sound to look past the individual parts and see a beautiful whole-the real picture that means something. That takes real devotion, dedication and love for the music. Not everyone has that in them, I'll respect that. But then again, not everyone's music is for me either, and I hope you can respect that too.
